About the Issues
Interconnectedness of Body and Mind
The neurobiological connection between our physical body and our emotions can manifest itself in many ways. We often think emotions only exist in our mind, but they also exist in our body. This is particularly true in young people from collectivist cultures.
Social Justice
We guide students on how certain aspects of society inform the way we think and behave with one another. A person accustomed to a system of oppression may internalize the message that a person of color can never equal one who is white, especially in academics.
Integrative Treatment
The B.R.I.D.G.E. Lab uses Integrative Treatments with our clients. This concept can best be understood through two different pathways. The first is how we integrate both the mind and the body in our practice, and the second is our integration of treatment across students' schools, homes, and communities.
Benefits of Mindfulness
Many people have a general idea of what mindfulness means; Merriam-Webster defines it as “the practice of maintaining a nonjudgmental state of heightened or complete awareness of one's thoughts, emotions, or experiences on a moment-to-moment basis”.
Concentrated Disadvantage
Neighborhoods that are at or below the poverty line and have existed that way for a long time are said to be areas of Concentrated Disadvantage. This is nearly always a result of systemic inequalities in our country.
Benefits of Group Work
Human beings are hardwired to search for community, which we typically first encounter with our immediate family. However, upon reaching adolescence, young people begin individuating from their primary caregivers in order to form their own sense of self-identity.
Social-Emotional Learning
Social-Emotional Learning is the evolution from what was once typically defined as social skills, i.e. how to be a healthy, functional member of society.
The School-to-Prison Pipeline
How does one get funneled from the classroom to the courtroom? The School-to-Prison Pipeline is the latest injustice that is being thrust upon young people of marginalized backgrounds.
ACE Scores
Young people are exceptionally resilient, but chronic exposure to more stress than they can handle leaves indelible marks on their bodies and minds.
